IWLA POND WATER TEST RESULTS

The water tests results have been received . The main analysis revealed that no pesticide or herbicide was detected. The results of the inorganics (ph, alkalinity, total hardness, etc.) all looked within expected ranges of a healthy pond.

Our water samples were also tested for metals. According to Reliance Laboratories, the maximum allowable mg./L(milligrams per liter) in drinking water for lead is 0.015mg/L (our sample was 0.047 mg/L); aluminum 0.05/L (ours 0.069 mg/L); iron 0.03 mg/L (ours 0.57 mg/L); manganese 0.05 mg/L (ours 1.77 mg/L). So, even though our water samples tested higher than drinking water standards, it is our considered opinion that our water is normal for a pond.

It is the collective belief of the Pond Committee that the fish die-off was the result of a combination of factors:

(1) High temperatures without rainfall for two weeks preceding the die-off. As temperature increases, its capacity to carry dissolved gases( including dissolved oxygen) decreases.

(2) Possibly too many fish in the pond for the concentration of available dissolved oxygen. Hence carrying capacity was exceeded.

(3) The pond aerators seemed to be operating at greatly reduced efficiency during the die-off period, thereby providing less oxygen for the fish.

As a result, the Pond Committee is in the process of purchasing additional aeration equipment and intends to install it as soon as possible.

The good news is that there has been no further fish die-off since the July episode. The fish log reflects active fishing by members and guests during the past month with all varieties of fish being caught . In addition, all fish appear to be very healthy.

Based on the water test results, normal fishing can resume, and fish may be taken for consumption.

Please log in your catches at the pavilion after each fishing trip, so we can better manage the fish population.
